How are KAAC's dates chosen?
At the end of the year, KAAC gathers all its feedback from coaches regarding
competition dates and takes that information to the KAAC Board of Directors.
What factors are considered?
The first thing to remember is that, when choosing competition dates, the
KAAC Board has three different grade levels to consider--Elementary, Middle and
High School. There are also more extra-curricular activities from which students
may choose than ever before.
Therefore,
dates are almost always selected by choosing between "the lesser of two
evils". There is no schedule that can possibly avoid every conflict with
other extra-curricular events.
When choosing dates, the Board considers holidays, major
state conferences, college preparatory testing dates, and other major statewide events when
possible. For the sake of our students, we try to keep the overall structure of
our schedule as static as possible from one year to the next. This allows our
participants and coaches to at least have some idea of when next year's
Governor's Cup will be.
What is NOT considered?
Because Governor's Cup is a statewide event, it isn't possible for the Board
to consider local or regional festivals, or the peculiarities of one school
district's schedule. In addition, there are other statewide extra-curricular
events which schedule years in advance with no consistency from one year to the
next. This can prevent us from factoring those in as well.
What about Spring Break?
There is no uniformity to Spring Break schedules statewide. We try to put
a schedule together that will complete all events before the great
majority of schools have their Spring Break, but if your school chooses to
schedule an "early" Spring Break you may be affected.
Why has FPS (and Composition on the Middle and High
School levels) been moved to Tuesdays?
The experimentation we have done with Tuesday events has resulted in very
positive feedback. Tuesday FPS in Elementary, and Tuesday FPS/Composition in
Middle and High School, allows more time for evaluation and gives the host
school more makeup days in case severe weather strikes.
