Kentucky Academic Championships Scheduled for March 16-18 in Louisville

From Saturday March 16 to Monday March 18, over 2500 Middle Grades and High School students from across the state will converge upon Louisville’s Galt House for the Kentucky Academic Championships, the finals of Kentucky’s prestigious Governor’s Cup academic competition.

Students and teams present at the State Finals have advanced through local district and regional Governor’s Cup Competitions.  The eight events of Governor’s Cup are:

  • Future Problem Solving, an award‑winning creative thinking team activity
  • Composition
  • Mathematics Written Assessment
  • Science Written Assessment
  • Social Studies Written Assessment
  • Language Arts Written Assessment
  • Arts and Humanities Written Assessment
  • Quick Recall, a team event open to the general public.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 PM Monday March 18, in the Galt House Grand Ballroom. A full schedule, pairings, and additional information is available at www.kaac.com/state-finals. Complete results will be posted at www.kaac.com by 6:30 p.m. Monday,.

Governor’s Cup is Kentucky’s most prestigious academic event. Over 20,000 students in grades 4-12 compete each year. Governor’s Cup is coordinated by the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition.

Format and Rules: Games will consist of 20 tossups and the associated bonuses, split into two untimed halves. The general format will consist of preliminary round robins, followed by regrouping into another round robin based on performance in the prelims. While we cannot guarantee a specific number of games at this time, we *can* guarantee that we will do our best to provide *all* teams with at least 7 games. In our previous tournaments, all teams played between 8 and 10 games.

 

We will be playing with NAQT’s standard rules, scoring, and timing, with the sole exception of untimed halves. In particular, we will **not be using bounce-back bonuses** to allow teams to prepare for the ruleset at MSNCT.

 

Fees:

First team: $70 / Subsequent teams: $60 each Bringing a buzzer system: -$10 each (up to 2) * Teams traveling over 150 miles (one way): -$10 Teams bringing a staffer: -$10 each ** Minimum fee (per team): $40

 

New to quiz bowl discount — Any school that has not participated in a pyramidal quiz bowl tournament (e.g., a tournament run on NAQT questions, or any tournament using pyramidal tossups and three-part

bonuses) between September 1, 2017 and January 1, 2019 automatically qualifies for the minimum fee of $40 per team.

 

* – For the purposes of this discount, the buzzer system must conform to NAQT’s guidelines for its national tournaments. In particular, systems must be wired, and must be able to operate independently of a computer.

This means that Inquisitor systems are *not* eligible for this discount.

This tournament is **ABSOLUTELY FREE TO PLAY!** Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Class Act Credit Union, we are able to defer ALL registration fees for this tournament. If you’ve never played quiz bowl before, this is a fantastic opportunity to come check it out for no cost! (Other than gas and food )

Kentucky Academic Bee and Bowl (4/13/2019)

International Academic Competitions is delighted to announce that the 2019 Kentucky Academic Bee and Bowl will be held at Winburn Middle School in Lexington, KY on Saturday, April 13. Like all of our competitions, this tournament is open to all students in 8th grade and younger who have not yet played at a full-day USABB tournament this academic year. If you are playing in an Academic Bee held in conjunction with a National History Bee and National Science Bee regional tournament, you are still welcome to attend. No prior qualification is needed, and out of state students are welcome as well. To register, please click here and follow the instructions. Be sure to read the registration rules, including the requirement to bring 1 reader for every 2 teams (i.e. 1 reader for 1 or 2 teams, 2 readers if registering 3 or 4 teams, etc.) or otherwise they must email info@iacompetitions.com in advance of the registration deadline and pay a $60 penalty per missing reader.

During the lunch break the D Set Version of the National Qualifying Exam for the US Geography Olympiad & International Geography Bee will be offered (one exam is used for both competitions). The cost is $10; students may sign up on the spot, though advance registration is recommended using the USABB tournament registration form.
